American cockroach

  • Average length - 1.6"
  • Average height - .28"
  • Reddish brown with a yellowish margin behind the head
  • One of the fastest running insects

American cockroaches generally live in moist areas, but can survive in dry areas if they have access to water. They prefer warm temperatures and do not tolerate cold temperatures.

In residential areas, these cockroaches live in basements, sewers, crawl spaces, and cracks in foundations, porches, and walkways, and may move outdoors during warm weather. This insect is a scavenger that feeds on decaying organic matter, such as fermenting foods.

Subterranean Termite

Termites are a group of eusocial insects usually classified at the taxonomic rank of order Isoptera. A typical colony contains nymphs, workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals.

Termites mostly feed on dead plant material, such as wood, leaf litter, and soil. Subterranean termites can cause serious structural damage to buildings and homes.

  • Black
  • Most likely species to infest a home in the US
  • Can forage up to 100 yards from their nest for food

Carpenter ants reside both outdoors and indoors in moist, decaying, or hollow wood. They cut "galleries" into the wood grain to provide passageways for movement.

Certain parts of a house, such as around and under windows, roof eaves, decks, and porches are more likely to be infested by carpenter ants than others.

  • Usually dark colored

Ticks live on the blood of mammals, birds, and occasionally reptiles and amphibians. A tick will attach itself to its host by inserting is chelicerae (cutting mandibles) and hypostome (feeding tube) into the skin. the hypostome is covered with re-curved teeth and serves as a hammer.

Ticks are vectors of a number of diseases harmful to humans, canines, and cattle, including Lyme disease, Q fever, Colorado tick fever, tularemia, tick-borne relapsing fever, and more.

Ticks are found in most wooded or forested regions throughout the world. They are especially common in areas where there are deer trails or human tracks.
